The Tatau

In year 7/8 extension we have been investigating the art of tatau. Tatau is a Samoan tattoo which men get. The tatau starts at the waist and stops at the knees most of the time. It is supposed to be a symbol of strength and pride.

Last week we were privileged to have Mr Tele'a come in to our class and show us his tattoo. He came in and answered our questions that we had about the tatau. He was very helpful giving us a lot of information.

We now have to create our own two tattoos one is to represent our culture and one to represent ourselves. I have currently only completed one and i'm working on my culture one. keep posted to see my tattoo design

Fire Pit Cooking

Last week all the year 8s went to camp in rukaka at Marsden Bay Christian Camp.
I am going to explain how to do one of our camp activities which was cooking eggs on a fire.

Step 1. Find an orange and 2 eggs.
Step 2. Cut the orange in half.
Step 3. Scoop out all the orange so you end up with two empty halves of an orange ( you can eat the orange if you want).
Step 4.Empty the eggs into each half of the orange.
Step 5. Wrap it up with aluminium foil.
Step 6. Place the package on the fire. The ideal place to put it on is in bright orange embers.
Step 7. Take it off the fire. If you want the yolk runny you can leave it on for 3 min or if you want the yolk hard leave it on for 5 min.

Unwrap the egg and if you want you can eat it straight out of the orange. Serve with salt and pepper. ENJOY!

Future Jobs

In the future I think there won't be as many jobs left for people as they might be all be taken by robots. however that  means that there will still be jobs as people still need to make the bots. new zealander craig nevill manning , Google's engineering director once said “if you had asked me when I was a teenager what I wanted to do when I grew up, I would not have said helping to build a search engine because the web did not exist then. For every new internet application, there will be a whole new set of associated jobs”.

Did you know many jobs are already being replaced by bots such as surgeons, weighters, security guards and even human like robots, but obviously there are some jobs that are irreplaceable such as Police, doctors, builders, vets and many more

My Avatar

Tangle pattern

As apart of our topic (art alive) we created a piece of art known as a tangle pattern. a tangle pattern is an endless knot .

first our teacher gave us a piece of paper that we had to draw a pattern on. For my piece I grabbed a compass and drew awhole lot of circles. We now only need a few more people to finish their bits and then we can connect them.

Hexoganal learning

We had to connect hexagons with words on them and they had to relate. Here is mine

First day

Yesterday was the first day of the term and what a shock it was when we arrived at school and our class had doubled. Our class (class 1) had joined with class five so now our class has more than 60 kids.

I think it wasn't really a big deal because everything just felt normal.

A couple of friends and I made this movie in four days to show our self management skills see how we did.I think I did well because I acted in the movie and I also helped edit. If i were to do this again i would probably change the scene of the war.

Storylines Tour

The bus was off ,we were on our way to the storylines tour at the Vodafone events centre. We arrived at the events centre and there was already  a whole lot of schools there. We waited and ate our lunch in the hallway until we were escorted into the room where all the authors were.

My favourite two authors were Jill Macgregor and Cath Mayo. The reason I liked Jill was because I could kind of relate too her because when she was younger she did not like writing. But it wasn't until ten years ago. She went to the islands and took a lot of photos she came back too NZ and showed her friends. Her friends suggested that she wrote about the photos so she did. Funnily enough her writing and her photos were published in school journals.

I also liked Cathrine because she told stories about ancient Greece  and in an interesting way aswell. She was the only one who bothered to use the projector to show pictures. Did you know that she actually went to Greece, she even went caving and incorperated it in her stories.

Overall I think I learnt alot of stuff from the trip. And i would like too thank all the authors that were on the storylines tour.

Storyline Tour

This week on thursday 28th of august 2014, our extension group is going to the Vodafone events centre to attend the storyline tour. We will be listening to a variety of authors but I will be focusing on one particular author named Catherine Mayo. Cath writes books for a wide ranged audience 13+. Cath was born in a  Catholic maternity hospital in Auckland. She is also a musician able to play violin playing in a band called Gentle Annie.

If I were to ask her a few questions they would be
  • When you first started writing what kind of genre did you write about.
  • If I wanted to get into writing professionally what would be some good advice
There will also be other authors like Paula Green who focuses a lot on children's poetry. She was also born and raised in west auckland.

Another author that will be there is Jill Mac Gregor who focuses on different cultured kids books. Jill lives in the Kapiti coast where she was also a teacher for many years.

Juliette Mc Iver will also be attending the tour. Juliette tought english in between jobs in wellington.

Drugs

In life education my class learnt about drugs here is just a bit of what we learnt.

Drugs, one of the most common crimes in the world. But there is one particular drug that is extremely common. Marijuana also known as tinies, weed or pot. Marijuana is a gateway drug meaning its what starts the use of drugs. Drugs can create hallucinations, altered state of mind, brain dysfunction and in extreme cases death. So always remember that drugs don’t choose people, people choose drugs make the right choice!

My Mascot

A mascot is any person, animal, or object that is supposedly supposed to bring luck or anything used to represent a group with a common public status , such as a school, professional sports team, society, or brand name. Mascots are also used as not real , representative spokespeople for consumer products, such as the thistle used in this years commonwealth games.

The Thistles name is Clyde a girl named Beth Gilmour designed him. A thistle is a type of flower which is covered in Prickles. The mascot has been on tv many many times.

I have made a mascot for if in the future the commonwealth games come to New Zealand. His.His name is ferny the kiwi. He is a native bird called a kiwi and he has the NZ flag attached to his back.

Astria

On Astria Iisa and I have finished the game meaning we have picked a solution to stop the asteroid from hitting the planet. We have decided that the best way to do that was the solar sail. which was a machine that uses the suns rays and directs them towards the meteorite disintegrating the rock.

After giving our decision to the council we had discovered a bug in the game it was that the game froze completely as we nearly finished.

Astria

Today we trialled a game called astria countdown to impact. This game was no ordinary game but a literacy game. The game was an educational and fun game. The aim of the game is to pick a solution to save astria from being hit by a meteorite and you have 99 2minute days.

We had to gather information to help us make our decision between 3 different solutions. We now have 70 days to save astria from imploding. I cant wait to see what solution I will think is the best.

Commonwealth Games

The All Blacks sevens had never lost a game in the commonwealth games until 2014 when they face the south African springboks. At 8:35 New Zealand time 28/7/14 was the the start of a devastating game.

New Zealand was receiving at the start but not for long as the south Africans put their heart and soul into the game. it was a tough game both for the NZers and the Africans.

but unfortunately New Zealand came out second best as the whistle was blown. The score was New Zealand 12 – 17 South Africa the streak was broken.

The Black Mamba

The Black Mamba, arguably one of the deadliest snakes in the world are known to be very aggressive and strike with extreme accuracy. Being the fastest land snake in the world must be an awesome advantage. People say that the Black Mamba is capable of reaching speeds of up to  20kmph.

This snake is found in many parts of Africa and populates a lot of sugarcane fields. The reason they are found in sugarcane fields is that they like to climb the canes to sit and bask at the top, maybe even wait for prey.

If you were to be bitten by this snake an adult Black Mamba can deliver up to 120 mg of venom in one bite, which can kill you as fast as 20mins. Without applying a special anti venom within 10 mins ,100% of the time the bite is extremely fatal usually ending in death.

Although not many animals dare to face the Black Mamba there are still few that are able to compete with them. For example the Snake Eagle and some other birds occasionally kill them. Even Mongoose are a predator to the snake as they are somewhat immune to venom ,and mongoose are extremely fast.

Aren’t we lucky they are only in Africa. Overall I think that the black mamba is the deadliest snake in the world. Not only are the extremely venomous but they are also the fastest snake.
